My Heart Runneth Over Wednesdays

my heart runneth over with projects.

We have been so busy working on projects the past few months and it has been killing me that I haven't taken the time to get some things posted here.
It's about dang time, right!??!

The girls and I made a holder for their headbands.
We took an oatmeal canister and used Modge Podge to adhere 2 pieces of scrapbook paper.  I trimmed the excess and put a layer of Modge Podge on top.

I let E decide what she wanted to do with the lid.  She chose a small blue scrap of paper and Modge Podged it on.
At some point, I plan to hot glue it to a candle pedestal, but haven't found the right one quite yet.

Regardless...we LOVE this.  No more headbands stuck in drawers or lost all over the house (ok...maybe THAT is still happening).

It doesn't take much

My girls talked me into going to Dairy Queen last night.
I'm not going to lie, it didn't take ALL that much convincing.
A blue raspberry Artic Freeze (aka Mister Misty for those of us old enough to remember that name) float shared with my kids, did it for me.
That's all it took.
I was in heaven.

My Heart Hero

We have been so very blessed to have been touched by a wonderful organization, Heart Heroes.

Kitty is amazing!  Her family has been touched by Congenital Heart Defects and she started this organization to connect CHD families,  and to empower heart babies (children) to feel invincible when they are visiting hospitals and doctors offices.

Recently we helped sell suckers to support Heart Heroes
Our little Heart Man was the perfect spokesman for the cause.  And, shockingly, it was the first time he donned his cape.
Check him out......he's pretty stinking cute!!

P.S. Sorry, the videos not that great...it was shot from my phone.....

I'm sorry

I've been a a really bad blogger lately.
Life is happening all around me and I'm not capturing it quite like I want to.
But I AM living it.....in a crazy, busy way.....

Eventually I'll catch up on my blogging.
The list on my fridge of blogging topics is getting quite looooooonnnnnggggg.

After I take 2 of my 3 kids to the doctor, sell suckers for charity, go to the dentist, make five returns, work a 45+ hour week, work out at 5am four days, get a hair cut, have a play date, deal with any last minute emergencies/change of plans, and find time to relax, play with my kids and sleep (all this week)....I'll get to the blog....promise, I will.

A Mended Heart...

Did you know:
-Congenital heart defects are the most common types of birth defects in children.  In fact, nearly 1 out of every 100 babies in the U.S. is born with a congenital heart defect each year.  In 2012, about 1 million babies will be diagnosed with CHD worldwide.

-Congenital heart defects are approximately 60 time more prevalent than childhood cancer and are the leading cause of death in the first year of life.

In honor of our little heart man (a.k.a. our Heart Hero!):

(p.s. this picture cracks me up!  His first real time playing in the snow!! 5 months post-OHS)

We are hoping to increase awareness and educate as many people as possible so that early diagnosis and care may result.

The more common heart birth defects are:

-Patent ductus arteriosus -- an artery that does not close as it is supposed to
-Septal defect -- hole that allows oxygenated and un-oxygenated blood to mix (EIV had 2 of these!)
-Heart valve defects -- valves do not open and close normally
-Coarctation of the aorta -- narrowing of the aorta

This is the short list, there are actually many, many more.  Heart defects are as varied as the children who have them.  Many can be fixed surgically (PRAISE GOD!); others have symptoms that are controlled with medications.

These defects can be caused by many environmental factors or genetics, however most causes remain unknown.

Symptoms to watch for in children:
-recurring respiratory infection
-Asthma-like symptoms
-shortness of breath
-complaints of 'funny' feelings in the chest area
-paleness, especially after exertion
-excess sweating
-bluish lips, fingers or nail beds
-irregular heart beat
-excessive tiredness
-poor eating (especially in infants)
Report any symptoms to your doctor, and ask for a cardiology check. Some symptoms are so mild that a diagnosis of a congenital defect is made during teen or even early adult years.  However, these symptoms can  mean an undiagnosed disaster for a child.  Make sure you report them to a doctor even if they seem temporary or come and go.

There are many, many great web-resources to learn more about CHDs.
A couple I recommend are:
The American Heart Association:

Mended Little Hearts:

We are so, so blessed, as EIV's defects were corrected with open-heart surgery.  For many children, that may not be the case.  Please spread the word about CHD.  Please pray for the millions of families affected by CHD.  Please give of your time or resources to help these children and families.

I thank God each and every day for our little heart miracle!  I thank God for Dr. Duncan and the fabulous cardio team at Children's hospital in Omaha.

Remember.....'Mended Hearts are Special Hearts"

Groundhog's Day

Our morning conversation about the premise behind Groundhog's Day:

Me:  "H, so what is Groundhog's day all about?"
H: "If the Groundhog sees his shadow, it means 6 more week of Christmas"

Happy Holidays.....for six more weeks :)

My Heart Runneth Over Wednesdays

my heart runneth over with........pride!

I told E that she could make some videos to post on the blog.
I've never seen this girl more excited!!
Check her out.
She is: assertive, silly, all over the place (just a tad ADD.), thoughtful, imaginative, quite the talker, considerate, loving the camera and oh....so much more!
I'm so proud to be her momma!
